Minecraft: Story Mode is a Minecraft-based game distributed by TellTale Games, as a collaboration with Mojang Studios (then Mojang). With a total of 2 seasons, the 13 episodes were released from 2015 to 2017. Even after the closure of TellTale Games in 2018, the fanbase of Minecraft Story Mode still thrives a decade later.
The Minecraft: Story Mode community has become one of the most creative fanbases on the internet. With the game being a Minecraft-based game, certain choices that affect the story, and enough room for backstories and headcanons, this alone allows the fans to create their own fanfictions, even expanding them into their own entire series filled with its own lore, characters, side stories, and so much more. The stories range from animations to comics to books posted on fanfiction sites, such as Wattpad, AO3, and FanFiction.net.
With all the hype centered around fan made Minecraft: Story Mode stories, more people have jumped in on the opportunity to bring their own creative perspective to the table, some which are incredibly unique.
This is where Minecraft Story Mode: The Rewritten Legends comes into play. Originally known as "Minecraft Story Mode: Rewrite", it is a book series on Wattpad, written by IzzyQueen12, also known as Crystal Amity, a Wattpad author in the MCSM fandom. Initially released on May 9, 2021, the synopsis reads as this:
The four siblings and their friends lived together happily in their small little treehouse, living peacefully with each other and taking care of one another. They are what anyone would think of normal teenagers; dorky, young, wanting to have fun and most importantly: learning more about the world around them. Of course, all good things came to an end and the eldest sibling finally moved out to start a new life with his new boyfriend(alongside their youngest sister). While they does occasionally come back to visit, it's just not the same without them and the three remaining siblings have to go on adjusting to life without their other siblings around.
Just as the three remaining siblings(Jesse, Jess(F!Jesse) and Nikki) thought they'd finally get to adjust, a new problem came up; a vicious man-eating monster has been unleashed and it's now up to them to save the world. The siblings with their friends of course have to travel to different worlds, going to places they only dreamed of and facing new obstacles; wether it'd be arguments between their team or their enemies throwing all it could at them.
But will these siblings and friends be able to take down this terrifying beast, you may ask? Will they be lost in time or be part in history? Will their story be told or will it remain a mystery? Would they be able to make a difference and will they work together to overcome their issues? [src]
The story borrows the original character Nikki, from the Minecraft Story Mode: Rewritten series, as discussed previously. In fact, the majority of The Rewritten Legends is actually inspired by the Rewritten series, with both stories rewriting Minecraft: Story Mode, but with a large number of noticeable differences, as well as Amity's own additions she brings to the table.
The Jesse options used are green suspenders Male Jesse and red hair clip Female Jesse (re-named to Jess), with Nikki (just like her siblings) being race swapped as a biracial black/Asian girl, but still donnes her green eyes. But unlike Nikki in Minecraft Story Mode: Rewritten, this version of Nikki goes to Boom Town instead of Redstonia, and therefore never wields the Command Block Amulet. This major change, however, isn't too impactful, as Nikki still has her firey temper, small size, and warrior-like personality.
Jesse, Jess, and Nikki have always been there for each other. Without a father in their lives, their older brother Velvet was always there for them, protecting them from bullies, such as Aiden, and allowing them to be as sneaky anytime! But just a couple months before the events of "Order of the Stone: Part 1", Velvet and their youngest sister Lily moved to the Nether, with Velvet's new boyfriend. Even when they visit occasionally, it isn't the same without them.
This backstory may have a little more details to them, but it very much explains some of the characters' personalities and motivations, later seen in the story. Velvet was always described as a care free, laid back person who allowed his siblings to have fun, which is a major contrast to Jesse, the oldest of the trio, who is seen to be a lot more stricter and overprotective of Jess and Nikki.
The sisters, on the other hand, aren't very fond of Jesse's tough restrictions, and wish to do things on their own terms. For example, when Jess and Nikki meet Zephyr the Ender Bat, Jesse is strongly against the idea, and Nikki says that Velvet would've let her keep the bat. This, and many other examples, comes to show the major differences between the two older brothers. Deep down, however, Jesse truly cares for his sisters, and is afraid of losing them.
The siblings' backstory isn't the only major emotional aspect of their character. It's the tension between Jesse and Lukas.
Unlike most fan made choices, where Jesse is usually nice and opens up to Lukas, he is instead a whole lot harsher to Lukas, while Jess is the nice one. This may be very striking and surprising to many fans of The Rewritten Legends, reading the story for the first time because they are so used to Jesse's compassion. But there's a reason behind it.
When Jesse was younger, he and Lukas used to be friends. But when Aiden started picking on Jesse, Lukas didn't do anything to protect Jesse, who hated on him ever since. Throughout the Wither Storm Arc, Jesse would tell Lukas to stay away from Jess, who instead chose to be nice to him, and the two formed a close bond, hinting at their romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Lukas did the best he could to prove himself useful to the team.
Jess had no idea about Jesse and Lukas' troubled past, so she and Nikki would get onto Jesse for holding such a grudge against Lukas, reminding him that there were bigger issues at stake. Lukas, who held onto that guilt for years, eventually opened up to Jess about the truth that he was the one in the wrong. And even though Jesse was harsh, his reasoning behind it was very relatable to those who were victims of bullying when they were kids. With the love and support of Jess, Lukas owned up to his mistakes, and over time, he and Jesse started to put their differences aside and make amends.
These subplots of drama and conflict amongst the group are driven during their adventures to stop the Wither Storm. The tension is always there, but the group still do the best they can to complete their mission.
Apart from the siblings going everywhere together, the conflict and backstory doesn't stop there. The Rewritten Legends introduces so much more of it's own original characters, allowing it to be so much more than just a rewrite of the beloved game. The Wither Storm Arc introduces three new characters: Chris, Maggie, and Mini.
This trio of teenagers are around the same age as the main characters, but have one unique thing in common: Their connection to the old Order of the Stone. Maggie is the sister of Magnus, Chris is the cousin of Ellegaard, and Mini is the apprentice of Gabriel.
They appear in the story during the events of "Assembly Required: Parts 1 and 2", when the group split up to go find Magnus and Ellegaard. While Maggie is a griefer from Boom Town, and Chris is from Redstonia, Mini meets Axel, Jess, Nikki, and Lukas in the Order's Temple, hoping to find Gabriel after the EnderCon disaster, but is later distraught to hear that he didn't make it. They knew each other as kids, when the Order was still together, but split up when the Order went their own separate ways.
Chris, Maggie, and Mini don't just become side characters or younger versions of the Order. They become close friends with the main characters by joining them on their journey. Especially Nikki and Maggie, whose relationship is hinted at something romantic. They bond over having an overprotective sibling, and Maggie encourages her to stay true to her own self. Mini was always a fighter, just like her mentor Gabriel, and was always willing to put others first before herself.
The one that has a compelling character, out of all three of them, is Chris. He always felt overshadowed by his cousin Ellegaard. The two used to be close, but over the years, they slowly drifted, and grew a little cold and distant, even jealous of everyone else's close relationship with their family members. Despite this, he still remained kind and true to heart, willing to help save the day. But he hit rock bottom when Ellegaard tragically died, and in her last moments, apologized to Chris, wishing she fixed things sooner. Devastated, Chris didn't know what to do now.
Jess, who didn't know him as well, reached out to him when no one else did. She never knew her father, and knowing what it was like to lose someone, she gave him words of motivation, telling him that he could choose his own path, one that made him happy.
I could go on all day about the deep lessons and tropes this story explores. It isn't just a simple rewrite of goofy characters. It's a complex emotional arc of relatable characters in tough situations. The world building and backstories further add to the tension. They don't just sit in the background. The characters carry this conflict throughout the whole series, and onward. It didn't need magic and enchantments for it to stand out so well. For those who are interested in reading the story, it is available on Wattpad. Episodes 1-5 are complete, as of today, and the next parts of Episode 6 are currently a work in progress. There is a Season 2 version, but it is outdated and non-canon to the main story. However, the story is still worth the read, and it deserves more views and recognition.
